ISSH in detail

ISSH stick burning on its holder, brass ruler

Twenty minutes out of 1,440

ISSH takes its name from isshu, “one stick”: the time it takes an incense stick to burn down. In Zen temples, monks measured the length of their meditation this way, and the shu became a unit of time. ISSH takes up this idea and adds the value of time to the scent: each stick burns for about twenty minutes, twenty minutes taken from the 1,440 that make up a day.

The wooden holder receives the stick; the brass ruler, slipped into its groove, shows how much time is left to burn. A simple ritual, born in Japan, to mark the start or end of a day.

The six ISSH incense packs

Six scents for six moments

Each scent corresponds to a moment of the day and bears a name in the form of an intention. Shitaku wo totonoeru, “getting ready”: hinoki, the Japanese cypress, for a gentle awakening in the calm morning light. Yohaku wo totonoeru, “keeping a clear mind”: jasmine on a woody note. Kokyu wo totonoeru, “settling your breath”: camphor, fresh as a breeze through young leaves.

Yosooi wo totonoeru, “taking care of your appearance”: sandalwood and amber, a dignified, elegant scent. Igokochi wo totonoeru, “making yourself comfortable”: a rich, bitter note of freshly roasted coffee, for dusk. Kyo wo totonoeru, “putting away the day's memories”: a smoky sweetness of layered woods, for a peaceful night. Each pack contains 30 sticks, made in Japan.

  • Shitaku · hinoki
  • Yohaku · jasmine and wood
  • Kokyu · camphor
  • Yosooi · sandalwood and amber
  • Igokochi · roasted coffee
  • Kyo · smoky wood

The neizitsu and annon gift sets

Two gift sets bring together three scents, the wooden holder, the brass ruler and the pin. Neizitsu, “peaceful day”, gathers the morning and daytime scents: shitaku, yohaku and kokyu. Annon, “tranquillity”, the evening ones: yosooi, igokochi and kyo.

Each gift set contains 60 sticks, 20 per scent, that is twenty hours of calm. A complete gift to begin the ritual.

A hand placing an ISSH stick in its holder

The holder and how to use it

Place the holder on a non-combustible surface, such as an incense dish. Slide the ruler into the groove, with the zero mark at the bottom, facing the stick: it shows the time remaining. Insert the stick into the hole in the holder, light the tip, blow out the flame and let it burn down. After use, the brass pin, pushed into the lower hole, pushes out what is left of the stick.

The wooden body has a fire-retardant coating; the ruler, pin and eyelet are made of brass and take on an elegant patina over time. Ruler and pin can be washed with a mild detergent, the wood is cleaned dry, and a burning stick is never left unattended.
